My graduate studies concentrated on two-dimensional design, typography, illustration and design education. Structured courses and individual investigations with visual communication design faculty were supplemented with guest faculty: Bob Aufuldish, Lance Hidy, Chip Kidd, Gerald Lange, Katherine McCoy, Jilly Simons, and Kathy Wariner.

I specialize in the development of strategic and user-centered design solutions including: active media, identity systems, illustration, packaging design and surface design. Current clients include Mumm Napa and Target.

By leveraging my background in design education, I assembled and led the design team at Organic in Chicago by creating an environment that encourages analytical thinking, supports design as an exploratory process and destination, and facilitates collaboration and personal growth.
      As a project lead, I oversaw and encouraged the integration of a site's information architecture, editorial and design planning. Because of this role, I have developed an interest in the problem definition phase of the design process and an interest in translating a brand's architecture and positioning into an experiential environment. My B2C experience includes work for the educational and retail industries including sporting good retailers, toy manufacturers and mass discounters.

Closer Look Creative is a cross-disciplinary, new media communications firm that closely integrates strategy, design and technology to build and deploy interactive solutions for a variety of information intensive industries.
     I collaborated with clients and the development team to translate tactical objectives into an appropriate, coherent and clear visual form. I advised the instructional designer and technical architect on content and site architecture, identified and clarified information hierarchies, and developed the user interface, wayfinding system and look and feel. In addition, I managed any necessary freelance and production staff, and teamed with programmers to ensure the design and underlying technology were properly integrated.

As a book designer, I developed the brand identity of the Wick Poetry Chapbook Series, to include its format, alphaglyph, and the first four volumes. As a marketing designer, I worked in conjunction with the marketing director to develop advertisements, order forms and exhibits to promote our collection of titles focused on Civil War history and regional concerns.

Glyphix is an honors student-run, faculty-supervised design studio. Selected graduate and undergraduate students work as a team in the development of work for not-for-profit clients. For three semesters, I developed short- and long-term identity systems and promotional materials for The Porthouse Theatre Company, Theatre Kent and Kent State University's Division of Visual Communication Design.

For these workshops, I instructed undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and guest instructors in the experimental use of digital media for ink jet, intaglio, relief and silk screen prints.

For five semesters, I taught undergraduate visual communication design courses covering the principles of two-dimensional composition and typography. I additionally co-chaired a team of graduate teaching assistants restructuring the curriculum of the foundational design course.

As a Squad Leader, I commanded ten enlisted personnel in an engineering unit whose primary objective was road construction with a secondary emphasis on combat readiness. As Assistant Platoon Sergeant, I was second-in-command of thirty-five enlisted personnel.
